archaeological site, ancient civilization, historical layer / disappeared object
The site of a major Iron Age settlement of the Trinovantes southwest of Colchester (Roman Camulodunum), largely overlapping Gosbecks Farm. This was taken over and developed by the Romans, who built a theater, temple, circus (stadium), and fort, but later the focal point of the Roman settlement shifted to what is now the central area of Colchester, about 3.5 km (2 miles) to the northeast. Part of the site is now an archaeological park.
