Harlem Meer

USA / New Jersey / Edgewater / Central Park Footpaths

Central Park designers Olmsted and Vaux named this man-made water body “the Meer” - Dutch for “lake.” It was a nod to the 17th Century European settlers who first inhabited the village of Harlem. The northern end of the park conceived it around the Harlem Meer, which linked to a loch and a ravine, which was constructed through the north woods. All of this was a sequence of nature that approximated the Adirondacks or some rural stretch of the Hudson Valley.
