St. Ivan Island

The largest of the five islands on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Here are found traces of a Thracian sanctuary from the 7th century BC, an ancient Greek temple probably dedicated to Apollo the Healer (5th century BC), remains of the monastery of St. John Precursor (Sv. Yoan Predtecha), an ancient lighthouse, a Russian military cemetery. In 2001, the islands of St. Ivan and St. Peter are declared cultural monuments of national importance. In 2010 on this islands were discovered during excavations by Prof. Kazimir Popkonstantinov reliquaries with the relics of St. John the Baptist.
