The Gothic church of the Dominican friary founded by Walter de Burgo, Earl of Ulster, in 1269 was dedicated to Saint Peter the Martyr. In some older maps and sources, the site is mistakenly identified as a Franciscan (rather than Dominican) friary. Like many other ruined or abandoned Irish churches, the building and its grounds were afterwards used as a graveyard.
