The medieval abbey of Saint Kieran and the associated now-abandoned settlement were surrounded by a fortified bivallate earthworks perimeter. These are still noticeable, especially on the southern, western, and northern sides. The enclosed area included additional ecclesiastical structures that are not within the present enclosure of the abbey. The Anglo-Norman motte was built on the southwestern edge of this perimeter. The settlement was known as Saiger (modern spelling Saighir) or Seirkieran, from Saint Kieran.
