The French Quarter is the oldest and most famous neighborhood of the City of New Orleans. Founded by Bienville in 1718, the streets were laid out in 1721 by Adrian de Pauger, the royal engineer, following the design of Le Blond de la Tour. Many of the streets are named for the royal houses of France and Catholic saints.
The area is also known as the Vieux Carré ("Old Square" in French). The French Quarter is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
