Appleton is a city in Appleton Township, Swift County, Minnesota. The population was 1,412 at the 2010 census.

Appleton Township was first known as Phelps Township from 1870-72. The village of Appleton was founded in 1871-72, and incorporated in 1881. The railway built a station in 1879. The post office was first known as Clarksfield, 1872-73, and was originally platted on an old Indian camp site.
