Founded in 1875 by Joseph N Smith to produce carriage name plates, dash and rails, the enterprise was incorporated in 1898. By 1906, the company began making automotive trimmings including, locks, moldings, rolled shapes, stampings and machined products. A new, 77,000 sq. ft., two and three story factory was constructed in 1917 at East Grand Boulevard and Dubois Street and employment expanded to 750 workers. In 1924, the company entered receivership.
