In 1876, the McMillan rail car interests which controlled the Michigan Car Company established the Baugh Steam Forge Company and one year later erected a forge and rolling mill along Jefferson Avenue to produce axles, wrought iron bars and other castings for their car building business. John B. Baugh was appointed General Superintendent of the plant. In 1892, the Michigan Car Company and its various holdings including, the Detroit Car Wheel Co., Detroit Pipe & Foundry Co. and Baugh Steam Forge Co. were merged with the Peninsular Car Company to form The Michigan-Peninsular Car Company.

A further consolidation of the industry took place in 1899, when eleven independent car makers including The Michigan-Peninsular Car Co. joined together to form American Car & Foundry. With the cessation of car building operations in Detroit the land was sold in 1926 to the Detroit Railway and Harbor Terminal Company which constructed the existing 10 story terminal warehouse building shortly thereafter.
