Military Memorial (Sofia)

Bulgaria / Sofija grad / Sofia
First World War 1914-1918, 1934_construction, war memorial, 2017 construction

The site of the military memorial of the First and Sixth Sofia divisions. The original memorial, which featured plaques with the names of soldiers fallen in action 1885, 1912-1913, and 1915-1918, was demolished in the 1970s, before the "1300 years Bulgaria" monument was erected just to its east. In 2017 the newer monument, which had become dilapidated and mismanaged, was demolished, and a lion statue was erected on the site of the older monument, in the expectation that it would be restored on a grander scale. Contrary to popular belief and social controversy, the two monuments did not occupy the exact same space, and the old military memorial was not destroyed to open space for the building of the "1300 years Bulgaria" Monument.
