The architectural design of the Government House-the Governor's official residence-incorporates elements of both the Chamorro and Spanish cultural heritage. The building houses a mini-museum of Guam's antiquities, as well. Located on Chalan Palayo in Hagåtña Heights, the residence commands an excellent view of Hagåtña and the bay. Construction on the building began in 1952 and was completed two years later. Further major construction on the Government House was completed following the devastation of Super Typhoon Pamela in 1976. Today, the expanded structure-recently renovated in 1996-occupies 22,000 square feet.
