Sprawling 3,000 acre estate with a commanding view of the Pamunkey River. The main section of the house dates to 1690 (though all of the original structure is now encased in later expansions). Richard Littlepage III established Cumberland Town here in 1748, which became a busy shipping and trading port along with a tobacco inspection station which were common along rivers at the time. A military supply store and hospital was established here during the Revolutionary War. During the Civil War, General McClellan's army of 110,000 men (which is thought to be the largest army ever assembled at the time) camped here in May 1862. There are many Civil War era photographs that were taken here that demonstrate the vastness of the operations taking place at the time. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic district for its architectural and military significance.
