Notes: This building was constructed by the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program that operated between 1935 and 1943. The program provided work for unemployed people who were struggling to find jobs during the Great Depression. It was the only structure not demolished when the U.S. military bought 72,000 acres for the purpose of building Fort Chaffee in 1941. The 1943 patio behind the schoolhouse was constructed by German Prisoners of War.
