monument, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places
Historic stone monument listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Built: 1936
Material: fieldstone and concrete
Total height: 12 feet
Areas of significance: Politics/Government
Date added to NRHP: 1/30/1992
Notes: The congregation of the First Baptist Church erected this monument as an anti-Communist statement. It was meant to protest nearby Commonwealth College, which had just made the decision to focus its entire curriculum on Marxism and Communism, with an emphasis on encouraging militant activism. First Baptist Church's protestations, along with those of the community as a whole, eventually pressured the college into relocating elsewhere, and finally closing altogether.
