This replaced a long-defunct racquetball court facility called The Racquetballer (opened sometime in the late 1970s and closed sometime in the 1980s). Oral history says that the building fell into disrepair despite interest in restoring it as a sporting facility (a rock climbing facility was proposed for the site in the late 1990s), but it continued to rot. The Racquetballer was finally demolished around 2011.
