18th Century hunting lodge, probably built on the instructions of the Marquis of Rockingham. There are many follies and constructions in the locality connected with two factions of the family.

There was tremendous rivalry between Thomas Wentworth (3rd Earl of Strafford) of Wentworth Castle and Thomas Watson (later Thomas Watson-Wentworth) of Wentworth Woodhouse. The bone of contention was the inheritance (on the death of William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford) of the latter estate, which lies to the South East of Stainborough. A manifestation of this feud is still visible in the architectural follies that were built by the rivals, each on his own patch.
