Plaque Inscription: No. 808 CAMP SALVATION Here, on September 23, 1849, Lieut. Cave J. Couts, Escort Commander, International Boundary Commission, established Camp Salvation.
During the times of the California Gold Rush of the 1850s, there was a camp for refugees, that is now known as camp salvation. there is a stone with a plaque located in the Rockwood Plaza Park. This camp lasted a few months. There are sometimes where people host events where this plaque is located. The landmark initially meant that camp salvation was a place to rest and gain your energy for what was to come, kind of like a hotel. This landmark is a historical monument to the city of Calexico because it is viewed as a gesture of humanity. it may also be that about welcoming tourists into Calexico and making them feel at home by being kind to one another.
In the Rockwood Park there has been numerous of celebrations. The city has celebrated Independence day, and sometimes even athletic races, where the plaque has been either a finish line or a start line. Other events that have been established in that park, is when volunteers gather around with their tables and feed the homeless people or whoever is in need of food. Just recently a group of Africans came to the city through Mexicali, and some stayed in what was one Camp Salvation.
