John C. Ryan Residence

USA / New York / Roslyn Estates /
residence, Tudor (architecture), LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast

Residence designed by Chandler Stearns (of the firm of Stearns & Stanton) c. 1926 in the Tudor Revival style for John Carlos Ryan {capitalist} whose father, John Dennis, lived in "Cassleigh"/"Derrymore" next door. Noel Chamberlin prepared extensive landscape design for the 36-acre estate. The younger Ryan served as vice president of Montana Power Co. Ryan never lived in the 50,000sft estate due to a dispute in the family so it was purchased by Grover A. Whalen, Sr.

The 57-acre estate was turned into the Renaissance Country Club in 1956 which once featured a golf course, carriage house and horse paddocks. Later in 1990's, the manor house was redeveloped into condominiums by David Ross of North Hills while retaining historic integrity with new homes surrounding it. A 1996 charitable Mansions & Millionaires showcase event featured designers' visions for the eight condominium apartments located within the main home.
