Brooklyn Detention Center (New York City, New York)

USA / New York / New York City, New York / Atlantic Avenue, 275
 prison, municipal

The Brooklyn House of Detention for Men, built on Atlantic Avenue in 1957, is a single-cell jail that can house 815 adult males, many of whom await trial in Brooklyn and Staten Island courts. It was designed by LaPierre, Litchfield & Partners and was built by Castagna & Sons.

In Brooklyn (Kings County) and Staten Island (Richmond County) as in the other boroughs/counties, DOC transports inmate to and from the courts. The holding facilities for inmates making court appearances are located in or connected to the courthouses. These include the Supreme Courts, the Criminal Courts, and the Family Courts. Brooklyn also is home to one of DOC's two major reserve facilities that are closed or opened as needed by the jail system in response to inmate population fluctuations.
