Brookfield Place, originally known as the World Financial Center, is a complex of postmodern buildings across West Street from the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, overlooking the Hudson River. This complex is home to offices of major corporations including Merrill Lynch and American Express as well as Dow Jones and its Wall Street Journal division among others. The entire complex is owned by Brookfield Properties, except for the space occupied by American Express.
Designed by the Argentinian architect César Pelli, with Adamson Associates, the complex was built by developer Olympia & York between 1985 and 1988 on landfill used to build Battery Park City. The fill material came from dirt excavated during the building of the World Trade Center, as well as garbage, dirt and debris.
The complex consists of four major towers, plus One North End Avenue (which was built separately, but officially added to the complex when it was also purchased by Brookfield Properties), the Winter Garden, and low-rise connecting sections of retail between the towers.
The towers are: One World Financial Center - 577 feet, 40 floors, topped with a truncated square pyramid, Two World Financial Center - 645 feet, 44 floors, topped with a round dome, Three World Financial Center - 739 feet, 52 floors, topped with a pyramid, and Four World Financial Center - 500 feet, 34 floors, topped with a ziggurat (or stepped pyramid).
Portions of the complex, especially the Winter Gardens, were severely damaged in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but have since been reopened after significant repairs.
