Usually when one refers to "Northgate", they mean the collection of bars and restaurants facing University. Northgate actually covers the northern area and is the oldest neighborhood in town, and includes student-oriented apartments and rentals, a handful of churches and student centers, bars (lots of bars), restaurants, but very little actual retail. Between the closing of the Albertsons in late 1997 and the opening of the CVS in the early 2010s, Northgate even lacked a pharmacy.
