where did people get the idea that karachay is covered with concrete??? its actually justt filled with concrete blocks to keep the sediments(where most of the contamination is) from shifting. probably people heard of the pain of salvation album "one hour by the concrete lake" about karachay and assumed it was 100% fact. oh and by the way, is that an actual aerial photo of the lake and if so when was it taken and what is the source.

Absolutely correct. That's probably also the reason why people kept on saying the ash dump to the south-east is Lake Larachay. I also had to correct the wikipedia coordinates several times. I have no idea about the picture but on http://www.po-mayak.ru/upload/download/Mayak55big.avi one can find a very interesting video which contains also some information about the lake.

on youtube ther is a good video series on mayak called "nuclear lighthouse". while its all in russian, it does provide excellent visuals including lots of ground level footage of the lake. theres actually several minutes of video showing trucks, bulldozers, and cranes filling the lake with gravel and concrete blocks. i suggest the video to anyone.
