William B. Umstead State park is a 5,577-acre free public park operated by the state of North Carolina that offers tens of miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails as well as picnic areas and a lake with boat rentals. There are three main park entrances: one from NC-70; one from Ebenezer Church Road; and one from Harrison Avenue (exit 287 off of I-40).

The park contains one of the best examples of mixed mesophytic forest in the eastern Piedmont of North Carolina. This 61-acre area, known as Piedmont Beech Natural Area, is designated a National Natural Landmark.
