telecommunication, microwave tower / microwave transmission, tropospheric scatter station
Established in 1957 as a dual tropospheric and microwave transmitting and relay station in the White Alice Communications System (WACS), the Soldotna WACS site (callsign SXO) went operational with its troposcatter shot to the WACS site at Neklasson Lake 97 miles to the Northeast being connected. Joined shortly thereafter by a co-located pair of microwave relay shots to Elemendorf Air Force Base 66 miles Northeast and Diamond Ridge 62 miles South, the site operated with both communications systems into the 1970's before the White Alice System was being eclipsed by satellite communications and shut down.
Transferred to the ownership of AT&T Alascom thereafter, the site retained its microwave communication links and continues to provide telecommunication services for the Kenai Peninsula.
