Polyphengos Castle

Greece / Korinthia / Nemea /
castle, castle ruins, archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages

The castle of Polyphengos or Hagios Georgios (Polfant or Saint George) is located on Mount Polyphengos south of Nemea. The medieval settlement was located on the lower slopes of the mountain, while the castle occupied the northwestern summit. In the Middle Ages it served as an important Frankish castle in southern Greece. It was recaptured by the Byzantines under Andronikos Asan in 1320, but may have been recovered by the Franks by 1377, when it is mentioned as a fief of the Principality of Achaea. The castle is very poorly preserved, and few of the buildings and defenses can be traced.
