This was the site of the first bridge crossing the Mississippi River in the Minneapolis area, built by the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in 1867. That bridge lasted until the current bridge was built in 1893.

The 1893 bridge has gone through several rebuildings, changing its appearance in the process. There have been a few owners as well, the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway, then Great Northern, followed by Burlington Northern, and now BNSF Railway.
Amtrak used this bridge for the Empire Builder between Minneapolis and Fargo through Willmar until 1979, when the route switched to run through Staples.

Railroad bridges were built at 56 locations to cross the Mississippi River,
and 36 of these crossings are still in use by freight railroads.
