The remains of the ancient and medieval city named P`aitakaran in Armenian, Paidangaran in Syriac, and Baylaqan in Arabic. It constituted a major administrative center from the Sasanid into the Muslim Middle Ages, having displaced Partaw (Barda), and continued to prosper despite becoming tributary to Georgia in the 12th and being sacked by the Mongols in the 13th century. It was destroyed by Timur (Tamerlane) in the late 14th century, and although he rebuilt the city, it did not fully recover. The name of the abandoned city was eventually transferred to the modern Azerbaijani city of Beylagan, located 10 km to the southeast. The ruins of the old city are referred to by the names of the neighboring villages of Ören-kala and Kabirli.
