This bridge lies on the former Northern Pacific mainline connecting North Dakota with Duluth. This route was the first line built by the Northern Pacific Railroad, heading west from Carlton, Minnesota in 1871. Passenger train service on this line came to an end during the 1960s. The bridge has been replaced or rebuilt several times, most recently during 1984.
