The name derives from its use during the Mandate to store ammunition for the Police Academy nearby.

In Hebrew it is גבעת התחמושת‎, Giv'at HaTahmoshet.

Before 1967 this was a military post used by the Arab Legion, and it was the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Six Day War.
