Known in Hebrew as Giva'a Tzarfatit or Giva'at Shapira, this relatively new (1971) neighborhood is considered to be part of East Jerusalem and houses some 7,000 residents. It is located on territory that has been occupied since the Six-Day War in 1967 and later unilaterally annexed by Israel under the Jerusalem Law in 1980 in a move not recognized internationally.
Its proximity to Hebrew University encourages many students to stay here, as rent is low compared with the City Center, another popular option. Adjacent are the student dorms (a big bunch recently built), Mt. Scopus Haddasah Hospital, Hebrew University Campus of Mt. Scopus. Nearby neighbourhoods include Seikh Garah, Ramat Eshkol, Isawiya, Pisgat Ze'ev and Tzameret Ha-bira

Transpost: by taxi it will be about 15 minutes to the old city or downtown (expect 25-35 NIS), depending on traffic (which is worse these days, circa 2010, because of wide construction of light rail). Bus 4 takes you through Ramat Eshkol, near Geula, downtown, Emek Refa'im through Katamon up to Malha Mall. Bus 4A takes the same route but leaves from the Hebrew University Campus. Bus 28 leaves from the Hebrew University Campus, going through French Hill, through Sanhedria and Bar Ilan road to the Central Bus Station and further to the other Giva'at Ram Campus of Hebrew University. Also running are fast bus 42 to Giva'at Ram, 19 to Rehavia (stop next to Regency Hotel) and others.

Sleeping: Many Bed & Breakfast business operate in the neighborhood and enjoy a pleasant view over the Old City.
Geography: Being situated some 800m above sea level as part of the Mt. Scopus peak, French Hill enjoys snowfall on cold winters.
