This massive former movie/vaudeville palace was designed by Eugene De Rosa and James Whitford in 1929 in the Spanish Revival style for Solomon Brill as part of the RKO vaudeville circuit. The interior was designed by Nestor Castro in a lavish mix of Italian and Baroque styles with murals depicting scenes from Spain.

After shutting in 1972, and suffering several decades of neglect, it was saved by Rosemary Cappozalo who donated her life savings and used her home as collateral for loans (over one million dollars in total) to the organization. Through those efforts, the theater has been restored (albeit missing most of its orchestra which was leveled for use as a music venue and nightclub) and reopened for live performance. The theater was used as a Gossip Girl filming location for S2E16 where Rufus and Lily attend an event at the opera.
