office building, Neoclassical (architecture), 1912_construction
150-foot, 12-story Neo-Classical office building completed in 1912. Designed by Charles A. Platt for porcelain importers Bawo & Dotter, it is clad in brown brick, seven bays wide, above a 2-story stone and iron base, and below a limestone crown. The ground floor is black stone and metal, lined with storefronts, and has a service entrance at the west end, with the main entrance at the east end. The 2nd floor is beige cast-iron; each bay has four windows with transoms, divided by narrow mullions. The two end bays are set slightly further apart, and the piers around them are topped by ornamental patterned squares; the other piers are topped by simple circles on the metal spandrel above the windows. A stone cornice with a carved frieze caps the base.
The upper floors have paired windows in each bay, joined by stone sills, with projecting piers at the ends of the facade. A few of the windows have been fully or half-replaced with metal louvers. Above the center bay at the 3rd floor is a stone panel reading "BAWO & DOTTER BUILDING ANNO DOMINI MCMXII". It is flanked by a wealth of carved stone ornament. Smaller stone panels with shields and crests ornament the piers at various locations.
The crown is set off by a dentiled cornice, and has rounded columns separating the bays, each of which has four windows. A stone roof cornice tops the facade. The exposed upper part of the east elevation is clad in brown brick with stone panels. Both the cornice below the crown and the roof cornice wrap partly around to this facade. The ground floor is occupied by Turntable Chicken Jazz, Nan Xiang Xiaolong Bao restaurant, Market Crates eatery, and Starry Night bar.
