ruined castle, archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages, tell (mound), ancient ruins

The tell (habitation mound) located east of the modern village of Gündoğan (previous name Tilbeşar) is the location of an ancient and medieval city and fortification. It is attested since Assyrian times as Til-Bašere (in inscriptions of Shalmaneser III (859-824 BC), and later functioned as a Seleucid, Roman, and Armenian fortification. After the first Crusade, the castle of Turbessel became one of the main strongholds of the County of Edessa. During the county's conquest by the Zangids, the countess sold the castle to the Eastern Roman Emperor Manuel I Komnenos in 1150, but it was taken by the Zangids in 1151.
