The city was inhabited from the end of the third millennium and was called Kanesh by assyrians and Nesha by hittite. The settlement reached its peak during the first quarter of the second millennium B.C.
The Upper mound (Kanesh proper) was inhabited from the earliest phase of the Early Bronze Age, to the end of the Roman Period
