Ancient Sam'al, located at modern Zincirli, was the capital of the Neo-Hittite or Aramaean kingdom of Ya'idi or Yadiya during the early Iron Age. The kingdom and its capital passed under Assyrian rule in 717 BC. Archaeological excavations have revealed the royal palace surrounded by a circular perimeter of fortifications.
