Originally a railroad town called Hosbrook that sprang up in 1852, New Augusta was officially founded in 1876. On January 1, 1970, the town was absorbed into the City of Indianapolis after the city-county merger, known as Unigov. In 1989, New Augusta was listed as a historic district on the National Register for Historic Places, and in 1999, the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission granted recognition of New Augusta as a conservation district.
