Karakul | lake

Tajikistan / Gorno-Badakhshan / Murgob /
A stunning lake with mountain backdrop on the extreme western edge of China. Only 8km from the border with Tajikistan. From the lake You have a excellent view of Mustagh Ata (7546 m) and Kongur Tagh -Ridge with many glaciers.

  • with locals in a yurt, very nice if you've cycled from tashkurgin(sp.?) that day. When i came along it, the road was getting rebuilt for a 100km so was a long ride on river beds and pushing pushing the bike. Not much water along the way,

  • We stayed in a yhurt overnight. Plenty of snug blankets but still icy cold. Don't forget to bring a torch (flashlight) - the area generator goes off at 11pm and thereafter pitch black. Yoilets are far away so pee outside the yhurt. Breakfast at the pathetic cafe is pretty obnoxious but the coffee is almost hot (altitude). Walking the side of the lake at 5am is absolutely fantastic with Muzhtak Ata and the Pamir peaks in the sunrise.
