The open pits here were part of the former Afton copper-gold mine operation of Teck Corporation. Additional large orebodies have recently been discovered by new owner Abacus Mining, who is planning to resume mining in the near future (perhaps 2015) as part of its Ajax Project. The ore would likely be treated at the old Afton mill site 10 km to the west, which is also now owned by Abacus.

KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., a large mining and metallurgical firm from Poland, has joined in the Abacus project as a joint venture.
