industrial area, coal mine
Open pit coal mine operated by Coal Valley Resources Inc. (Sherritt International). The mine opened in 1978, and in 2006 expanded its production to 4 million tonnes per year of thermal coal, which is exported to Asian power plants. The mine has won many awards for its reclamation work, which includes the creation of several productive fishing lakes--you can see these lakes nearby.
Since 2005, mining has occurred in Pit 28 and 29 areas close to Coalspur and in Mercoal Phase 2 area adjacent to Mercoal. These pits do not show up on the photo.
