Add category
This is part of the historic Coal Branch area. Coal was first mined by underground methods from 1921 until 1956, then the Luscar mine was reopened as an open pit operation in the 1970s to provide coking coal to Japan. The mine closed in 2003, however the processing plant is still being used to clean coal from the Cheviot mine and loading onto railway cars.
