mine, copper mine, mining
One of the largest copper mines in the world, Highland Valley Copper is owned by Teck Resources. The Valley pit opened around 1984 and is the primary source of ore for HVC. Ore is crushed in the pit and delivered by conveyor belt to the mill. The HVC operation also includes the Lornex pit to the south, the Highmont pit to the east, and a concentrator mill that processes 136,000 tonnes of ore per day, producing copper and molybdenum concentrates which are trucked to Ashcroft then loaded onto rail cars for export to smelters around the world.
The current mine plan envisions the mine operating to 2025, however there are sufficient ore reserves in the area to keep the operation running another 15 or more years, depending on future copper prices and mining costs.
