Baluarte de Santa Barbara, named after the patron saint of artillerymen, began in 1593 as a wooden platform that protected the entrance to the Pasig River. It was rebuilt in stone with storage vaults and a powder magazine in 1599. Renovations were underwent during the 18th century, which includes the addition of a semi-circular platform named Falsabraga de Media Naranja.
This was established as a U.S. Army headquarters in 1904. Upon the Japanese occupation in 1942, this became a powder magazine and dungeon to prisoners killed at the end of Wold War II. It was severely damaged during the said war, leading to reconstructions from 1951 to 1967, in 1991, and 1998.
