One of three gold mines at Hemlo Ontario. Owned by Newmont Gold, The Golden Giant mine was an underground operation with a mill and refinery located 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) inland from the north shore of Lake Superior. The property produces gold bullion from the Hemlo deposit, which was discovered in 1981. The mine started production in 1985 and closed in 2006 when its ore reserves were depleted.
