The Empire and Tilden mines operate separate mining pits and iron ore processing facilities, but share a single management structure. The LS&I Railroad is also part of these jointly managed operations. The Empire Mine has been mining and processing the low-grade iron ore reserves on the Marquette Iron Range since the early 1960s.

Tilden Mine is owned 85% by Cliffs Natural Resources and 15% by US Steel and can produce 6 million tons of iron ore annually.

  • Both hematite and magnetite ore are mined from the Tilden Mine. The processing plant is capable of concentrating both types of ore. Due to water chemistry and temperature, hematite ore is processed from early spring to late fall. Magnetite ore is processed in winter.
  • By the way, it's big.
