The ancient Greek town of Halos was located to the southeast of modern Halmyros. The archaic town was located on the coast, and served as a Greek naval base against the Persians in 480 BC. After being sacked by the Macedonian general Parmenion in 346 BC, Halos was refounded in 302 BC on the location of a Macedonian military camp in below a hill to the southwest. This Hellenistic town declined in the Middle Ages, but a Byzantine fortification survived on the hilltop overlooking it, probably corresponding to the acropolis of the old settlement.
