Ancient Pydna was located on the coast in the northern part of Pieria. After a period as an Athenian outpost, it fell to Philip II of Macedon in 357 BC. Site of the battle of Pydna in 168 BC, in which the Romans defeated the last Macedonian king Perseus. In the Byzantine period it was replaced by the bishopric of Kitros.
