Shombehiya ridge

A hill ridge that lengthens the Sinjar mountainrange to the west into Syria. (Between 450-550 meters)

The ridge was used several times by the YPG/SDF forces during the autumn of 2015 as strategic height ground to advance, gain control and isolate the Al Hawl region in their Al Hawl campaign against ISIS.

Next to being strategically important, the ridge contains several historical sites it's underground maintains an important aquifers that feeds several oasis sites like the Bahrat Khatuniyah lake.

The water aquifer creates at a lot of places underground caving's that collapse in to sinkholes when the top soil layers aren't supported by harder under ground layers that where eroded by the water movement in the Aquifer.
