The Hillwood Commons Student Union building was designed in 1973 by the firm Bentel & Bentel from Long Island. Bentel & Bentel, founded in 1957, is an award-winning architecture firm based out of Locust Valley known for their government and educational buildings. The building is designed in the brutalist design inside and out with an open atrium, three stories, ample windows, auditoriums, an art gallery, and countless rooms. Currently the site is also home to a Bethpage Federal Credit Union branch and a Starbucks location.

Frederick and Maria Bentel’s design philosophy on the project was to integrate the whole campus experience from dining to student socialization under one roof. In a way the building serves at the heart and soul of the campus. The building received the 1974 American Institute of Architects “Gold Archi” award for its clever design. It was also featured in the 1980 AIA Architectural Guide to Nassau and Suffok Counties for its sympathetic integration into the campus setting without disturbing the look of other existing buildings and imaginative design concept.

The exterior and interior was used as a filming location for S1E19 of the the NBC series "Blindspot".
