The Centre for Nation Building and Languages was established as part of the innovations that has been brought about with the upgrading of TAR College to TAR University College (TAR UC) in May 2013.
While the Centre was officially established on 1 October 2013 under its current name, it is not exactly a new entity. The Centre’s functions have been carried out since 1996 when it was formerly known as the Extra-Mural Studies Department which housed, among others, the Division of Languages and the Division of Nation Building and Unity Studies. In 2009, these two divisions were amalgamated with the Faculty of Social Science, Arts and Humanities (formerly known as the School of Social Science and Humanities). However, with the newly acquired status of TAR UC, the two divisions were split from the main faculty of studies to form the present Centre. The two divisions have then been renamed as the Division of English and Foreign Languages and the Division of Mata Pelajaran Pengajian Umum.
The Centre strives to provide a wide range of language and general studies courses known as Mata Pelajaran Pengajian Umum to students at TAR UC. The Centre is also proud to be part of TAR UC to further complement and supplement the quality of education as required by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. The Centre intends to carve a niche for itself by providing a valuable learning experience to students as part of TAR UC’s on-going efforts in raising the academic standards of its students. The Centre aspires to deliver a holistic education to the students by helping them to acquire broad lifelong learning skills, which includes the mastery of soft skills, the appreciation for philosophy, history, cultural and moral values, as well as enhancing students’ language skills.
