Zelk is a church village and parish of the city of Halen, located at the confluence of the Velp and the Demer. It borders Zelem in the north, Halen in the east, Loksbergen in the south and Webbekom (city of Diest) in the west.
Zelk is first mentioned in 1108 as Seleche, Germanic for blessed dwelling place. Zelk has etymologically the same origin as Zelem, which is located on the other side of the Demer. They probably formed one village on both banks of the river in the early 12th century.
